fluffy the videogame designer? ()

by fluffy at 7:52 PM
Every night for the past several days I've had a dream about a video game I'd like to do, preferrably with the help of others (no way in hell I could do any of them on my own).

So, here's some of them. Please don't rip me off. (Consider hiring me as an actual game designer though! I'll work much cheaper than that Shigeru Miyamoto guy! And I can actually program and make actual game art and music and so on! That's, like, a lot more than Miyamoto-san!)

A cute dream ()

by fluffy at 1:40 PM
I dreamt I was at a dinner party. George W. Bush was there.

Damn you, George Foreman ()

Damn you to hell.

You and your indoor grill.

Energy Drinks: Addendum ()

A quick followup to the energy drinks guide.

Vodka-Pickled Cherries ()

by fluffy at 11:23 PM
Little balls of vodka, with the texture and just the slightest hint of cherry.

They're easy to make. Just get a jar of maraschino cherries, use the juice for something (probably a mixed drink of some sort), realize that they need to be kept in liquid or else they'll go fungal, decide that vodka would work well to preserve them, then forget about them for a month, and wonder why they taste funny when you use them in a Shirley Temple.

This is almost certainly going to get ugly ()

by fluffy at 7:12 PM
Yep, another Wisper bill came in the mail today. Yep, it was still woefully inaccurate.

Golden Bull marquee ()

Seen on the Golden Bull marquee this morning:
And God said, "Let there be creed," and it was bad.

Products which disturb me ()

by fluffy at 12:48 PM
There's a number of products I see every time I go to the grocery store which disturb me for various reasons.

Monitor and warranty ()

by fluffy at 3:05 PM
Just called Apple about the monitor, and found out the following fun facts:
  • They shipped the monitor on January 17
  • Without proof of purchase, this is what they consider to be the purchase date
  • I recall that actually bought it 1-2 weeks after I ordered it, making the purchase date in the neighborhood of January 24-31
  • This means that the $1000 monitor went bad 2-3 weeks after the warranty expired
  • Even if I could find a proof of purchase, Apple will not extend any grace period on the warranty, "because I had the option of purchasing an Apple Care protection plan"
  • So I'll have to live with this green stripe of pixels until I can afford to buy another expensive monitor, or pay $450 to get this one repaired (which is pointless because it only costs $600 now)

Taper ()

by fluffy at 2:56 AM
36 hours. 28 pages.

The thing which made me slow down was when I got "most of the way" done and then suddenly realized something:

God damn I have a lot left to write.

So, in one way, the experiment (write the entire thesis over a weekend) is a "failure," except for the greater experiment being a great success (finally get around to whittling things off of my to-do list).

I had a dream ()

by fluffy at 9:09 PM
Actually, this morning before I woke up I had a dream. I'd forgotten about it until now.

It was rather silly, but most dreams are, and they're just the random dump of a bored brain, so I'll avoid making more out of it than necessary.

24-hour thesis report ()

by fluffy at 1:19 PM
Went to bed at 3:30, woke up at 11, worked on thesis for 2 more hours.

Total time: 24 hours
Total awake time: 16 hours
Pages of text written by me: 18
Estimated level of completion: 50%
Outlook: good

Energy Drinks: A Guide ()

by fluffy at 2:50 AM
Okay, so as you may or may not know, set out to do the impossible and write my entire thesis this weekend.

As such, I stocked up on so-called "energy drinks," and am now fairly familiar with many flavors of them, which is possibly a big part of why I'm already so far along.

Worst burrito ever ()

by fluffy at 12:58 PM
At Amasita's, they make their own tortillas on the spot. Everything's usually fresh and warm and yummy. But today all of their burrito tortillas are stale and crunchy, and this burrito is an un-yummy mess.

Issues ()

by fluffy at 11:43 AM
The Hiptop's issue: Sometimes the backend server's cache gets all wonky and it will hit a dead-end with complex CGIs.

MovableType's issue: It has no way of detecting multiple identical posts (which would be utterly simple to add, by just adding a randomly-generated hidden "story key" to the "new entry" form), and it requires that the browser be able to step through a few (IMO badly-done) CGI-generated placeholder pages in order to do things like generating the static HTML and pinging the aggregation sites.

End result: Last night I ended up "publishing" 6 copies of the same entry, but none of them actually made it to the site.

Ack! ()

by fluffy at 11:56 PM
One of the reasons I decided to upgrade to an LCD monitor was because supposedly it'd last longer than a CRT...

So why do I have, on my (at time of purchase) $1000 Apple LCD monitor, a stripe of green pixels?!

February 10, 2003

Wow! ()

by fluffy at 1:31 PM
This morning, one of my cousins sent one of those damn virus hoax warnings to everyone in his address book. And the next message I got was my dad who replied to all, linked to the appropriate page on Symantec, and said not to forward virus warnings unless you've personally confirmed their existence using Google, and that sending out viruses is a form of virus/spam in its own right.

I'm impressed. :)

Don't feel like writing anything of substance, so I'll just do the stereotypical blog thing.

Men are from Mars,
And women from Venus
Even the ones who were
Born with a penis

God damnit ()

by fluffy at 12:10 AM
More shit with Wisper. I just got an itemized bill in the mail today, forwarded from the upstream. What follows is the invoice from ZiaNet (the upstream, who isn't at fault at all in this) and the angry email I just sent to Wisper.com/">Wisper's head network guy, the VP of marketing, and their upstream's billing person.

Wisper fucking sucks!!!

February 5, 2003

Nope, it's not Wisper's upstream ()

by fluffy at 12:39 PM
It's Wisper themselves who, in this case, fucking suck.

Switching the switch ()

by fluffy at 12:26 PM
After a recent heated discussion on the Apple-X11 mailinglist, someone emailed me privately to ask me why I run MacOS X if I dislike the limitations of the UI so much. My response was that I like the hardware and I like the OS, and there's a few apps I use in OSX which have no Linux equivalent.

My usage patterns of OSX is where I primarily run X11 applications (badly) but then have to put up with doing this under an environment it's not suited to (Quartz).

So, I've been thinking about going the other way around and running MacOnLinux under LinuxPPC.

Update

I've decided to just go back to XDarwin and stick with OSX.2, thanks to a few private emails and some comments on the Kuro5hin version of this entry.
