sfhb was fun (music, travels)
But, nearly every act made use of my better guitar, and everyone will definitely benefit from the work I've put in to recording the show (and hopefully people will appreciate how much work it'll be to mix and encode 12 hours of three channels of single-take audio into the individual songs).
One thing I found interesting this year is that the usual "focal point" clique of the show (namely JBB, Frankie Big Face, and Add) wasn't actually all that visible or central. The highly-visible star players were Hoblit and Ken, but oddly enough, a huge amount of attention went to Seth (of Brother Machine), who only played a handful of songs (and didn't play on anyone else's stuff) yet the crowd totally ate him up. He seems to have the whole "famous for being famous" thing going for him.
Granted, he's a pretty good musician, and seems to be a great guy, but like, people were tripping over each other to help him out and perform as good as possible on his music (he never actually assembled a group for his set — he just went on stage himself and played acoustic guitar and then other people just rushed the stage and joined in), while this wasn't afforded to other musicians who were (IMO) just as good.
The show itself was a bit disappointing, but most of that really just stems from Future Boy's lack of preparation. I don't know if he realizes how much work everyone else had to put in to make up for his lack of basic planning. In the end it all worked out, though, and FB's lack of preparedness at least spurred everyone else to put in a lot of extra effort to make it as good as possible, which is definitely better than if he'd pretended to be on top of things.
In the meantime, I think I'm coming down with strep throat. Blah.
