Yes, I believe that was the idea.

Anyone know if this is legitimate?

I was going to install the program and see for myself, but it requires you to have Internet Explorer version 6, an upgrade I don't really feel like making right now.

That's absolutely hilarious if it's legitimate. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if it is. That's Microsoft for you, no subtlety at all. "Any product you use that's not by Microsoft can DESTROY YOUR COMPUTER!"

Of course, it's hilarious anyway that it took them this long to come out with any sort of anti-spyware utility.

Hmmm, looks like they're using the same anti-direct-image-linking trick as you...

If it's the "Microsoft identifies Firefox as malware" thing, that's already been exposed as a hoax on slashdot.

Fine, I changed it to a local copy, so now it doesn't even attribute it to 4chan. (Not that I mind, seeing as how they also banned my webhost's IP address because of the temporary deep-link even though that doesn't actually, like, make any difference at all.)

Of course, they were just ripping it off from elsewhere, and yeah, it's a hoax. Oh well.
#4875 02/27/2005 12:48 pm I just did a scan myself to check
Since it installed new definitions, I rerean my scan, and I do not get that result. The bad grammar was a dead giveaway.

Heh, read the thread the image is in. They outright said it was a photoshop in mocking tones not like ten comments into it and then proceeded to make fun of CmdTaco for posting it on the front page later on.

Gullible isn't in Wikipedia, btw.

Just to confirm the non-hoaxness, I installed it on my cousin's PC last night (she's in college and has this strange fascination with Kazaa... non-lite and can't understand why her computer bogs down to non-usefulness)

Microsoft had 0 complaints about FireFox.

Now Trillian on the other hand I got a little warning about. (Not a "THIS IS BAD", more of a "I'm suspicous of this"...)

Well, seeing as they just released Firefox 1.0.1 stating several serious security holes, one of which involved "allowing your computer to be completely taken control of", even if it is a hoax, it is based on some fact.
