WTF, T-Mobile (, )

by fluffy at 8:38 AM
You were the last major provider to hold off on moving to a two-year contract. But now you too have decided that it's easier to lock customers in than to give superior service which people actually want to stay with.

For shame.

Also, I was thinking of switching to the Sidekick 3 on prepaid when it came out (if the SK3 really does finally fix most of the glaring problems with the Hiptop platform), but T-Mobile also shafts Sidekick users on prepaid relative to other phone users; the $1/day for data I was willing to live with, but it's 15 cents/minute for voice calls (instead of 10) and minutes expire after 3 months (instead of a year). WTH. There is absolutely no reason for them to charge more for voice on that device. If it weren't for that then I wouldn't have minded the $30/month data since with my usual calling patterns, $30 for data + $15 for calls is still less than the $55/month I'm paying for crappy limited data and way too many preallocated minutes, but $30 for data + $22.50 is kind of pushing it. And of course adding Sidekick data to a normal plan would cost about $14 more than what I currently spend on data.

I think I'll just switch to the no-frills prepaid crap.

Oy, except I just found a thing on their disclosures which mentioned that T-Mobile To Go can't roam onto other networks. I go to California (where T-Mobile has basically no coverage and you're usually on Cingular instead) often enough that this is a dealbreaker.

WTH, T-Mobile.

I use T-Mobile in California and have no issues. (Except at my house, were it barely has service, as opposed to Verizon and Cingular, which have no service.)

My experience has always been that while I'm in California my phone displays Cingular as the carrier, at least in the less-fashionable parts of LA (such as Van Nuys) and outlying parts of the Bay Area (Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, etc.).

I've not checked much down south. I've never had mine do Cingular in SF or the East Bay (or San Jose proper.)
