Microwave sizing ()

by fluffy at 1:46 PM
So, I thought I'd join the 20th century and finally get a microwave, mostly for just reheating things (since microwaves are better than a saucepan for that). I hold my counter space to be extremely precious, and I'd have to redo my cabinets to properly fit an over-the-range microwave, so I decided to look for the smallest microwave anyone sold, with the intent of putting it in one of my cabinets which I don't use and which has an electrical outlet in it.

DESTROY SOMALIA ()

by fluffy at 9:55 AM
I hadn't gotten a random call from Somalia in several months, so I'd figured they finally figured out that my number isn't who they're trying to get in touch with.

Until I just got a couple at FOUR IN THE MORNING. And of course I hadn't set up my new phone to be silent for Somalian Idiot calls.

Sadly I didn't have the presence of mind to answer them and yell at whoever was on the other end. Blah.

Ugh, though it turns out that the Hiptop doesn't currently let you use any of the 'discreet' alerts for phone calls. WTF.

What phones do I have left? ()

by fluffy at 5:57 PM
All that's left to sell are the R520m and the two broken phones (N-Gage QD and MPx220). I don't think they're even worth caring about anyway. So, hey, my phone collection is essentially no more. Cool.

A free email → AIM gateway ()

by fluffy at 12:06 AM
So, there aren't any good free email to AIM gateways out there which allow you to simply send an email to an AIM account. OR ARE THERE?!

Well there's one now.

Dude, chill ()

by fluffy at 10:32 PM
To the old guy with the crazy eyes in Lower Queen Anne:

Chill. Seriously.

I'm not entirely sure if you were already close to my side of the street when I started turning. Maybe you were already pretty close to my car, maybe not. I'm pretty sure I saw you start to run specifically in front of my car, but I was also pretty distracted looking for parking. You know how it goes. But it doesn't matter. I didn't hit you, I slowed down, you stopped and backed up, I kept going to not block traffic, and that's where most people let it go.

I'm not sure what you hoped to accomplish by following me around while I was looking for parking, gesticulating at me wildly and flipping me off, but it certainly didn't put me in any mood to roll down my window and apologize. Being confronted with the possibility of taking a knife to the face or even being yelled at has a tendency to make me not particularly amenable to wanting to do anything other than get away.

Thank you for not smashing in any of my windows or slashing my tires while my car was left defenseless several blocks away from the original random encounter. I am deeply sorry to have slightly delayed you by half a second while you were crossing the street.

HOWTO: Get affordable bleu cheese ()

by fluffy at 5:34 PM
Axioms:
  • Bleu cheese normally costs $20/pound
  • The salad bar costs $7/pound
  • The salad bar has bleu cheese crumbles
Method: fill a salad bar cup with bleu cheese, pack it down, and add on just enough spinach leaves to make it qualify as a "salad."

Result: $7/pound bleu cheese (with a little bit of spinach).

Phones: 2 down, a few to go (, )

by fluffy at 1:15 AM
Sold the T610 and X700. Still have yet to sell the Z520a and R520m. Also trying to sell the bricked N-Gage QD and the broken Motorola MPx220 (the latter really just selling as the accessory pack which comes with the broken phone). So far I've only goten one offer on the Z520a which was WAY less than I paid for it (compared to my asking price which is only somewhat less than I paid for it), and one interested nibble for the N-Gage but he lost interest when I couldn't give more information on what would be necessary to get it reflashed.

Honestly the Z520a is the only one I have left which I expect to sell at work. I should relist it on the for-sale list separately if I don't get any more nibbles tomorrow.

Trailer remixes ()

Just because the "Shining" trailer remix stopped meme-propagating doesn't mean trailer remixes stopped happening. iFilm has a great repository of them.

Major T-Mobile Security Issue (, )

by fluffy at 10:57 AM
We get more and more dependent on our devices, and more and more stuff is stored in them while they become more and more interconnected with everything else.

I've been with T-Mobile since 2001, and although they're still the best provider out there (in my opinion), they still have some pretty major potential problems. One particularly horrifying one is in terms of information security, which has been in the back of my mind for a few months, but which a well-publicized (and much more minor) issue with Sprint reminded me that I should really write about publicly, and this deserves a bit more than a comment on This Is Broken.

Strangely familiar! ()

by fluffy at 12:07 AM
So I've been a happy sidekick user again as of today. Things are a lot different than I remember from 4 years ago but they're also a lot the same. I'm remembering everything I loved about this platform. Hopefully the things I got fed up with aren't an issue anymore.

The Sidekick 3 sure looks and feels nice... (, )

by fluffy at 8:04 AM
...unfortunately, I won't know how good it actually is until T-Mobile activates my data service for it.

How long will it take? Who knows!

I love how they wasted no time in removing my T-Zones access when I changed plans but my account can't access the Hiptop APN yet, and every indication on the website makes it seem as if I won't get that access until the 25th. Ugh.

Guitar upgrade ()

by fluffy at 4:05 PM
I got tired of my crappy $80 Squier, so I decided to step up a little bit, and just got a new guitar (Epiphone Sheraton II, naural finish). Also, my microcube is okay for portable practice purposes but for stage and recording it's not very useful so I also bought a new amp (Marshall MG30DFX), which has a really awesome tone, and also a foot switch to switch between clean and distorted. Of course just a few days ago I bought a cheap/crappy distortion pedal, which I'll probably return since the distortion on this amp is way nicer, though the crappy pedal could be useful for vocal processing on the stage or something.

Now if only I could find a drummer so that Sockpuppet could become a real band (assuming Spud will play bass or keyboard for it).

PBS cooking show drinking game (, )

by fluffy at 10:15 AM
Do a shot if the host has a heavy accent. (Another shot if this makes them hard to understand. Another shot if this second shot makes them either impossible to understand. Another shot if this last shot makes you able to understand them perfectly despite the accent.)

Do a shot whenever the host says something like "I wish you could be here and smell this."

Do a shot whenever the host starts to eat directly off the serving platter.

Do a shot whenever the host has visibly almost messed up.

Do a shot when the host says not to worry about writing the recipe down because it's "on the website." (Do another shot if the website doesn't have the recipe.)

Do a shot when the host makes prolific use of a product which benefits them financially.

GJ T-Mobile (, )

by fluffy at 11:01 PM
So, when it comes to changing a minute plan, sure, they take a whole month for that to go into effect. But remove a feature like, say, the mobile Internet access, and they waste no time in shutting THAT off. Of course they'll still happily bill me for the whole month of access anyway.

I'd just reactivate it but I can't really be bothered. Of course that depends on how quickly they turn on Sidekick data access when the SK3 arrives. Knowing them, I won't actually see that until the 25th.

WTG T-Mobile.
