"New" bass ()

by fluffy at 10:59 PM
Today I noticed that yesterday someone posted a for-sale listing for his old fretless bass guitar, and so I emailed him about it expecting it to be sold already. He replied and said it was still available but there were a number of people interested in it but hadn't bought it yet.

So I went over to his office to check it out.

It was a really nice Samick solid-body fretless, which he had upgraded all the components of (including the pickups, and he converted the electrics from passive to active). Since it was active I could try it out on just headphones.

He wanted $200 for it, and considering the state it was in and how much work he'd done on it I'm sure it was worth a lot more. I'd been wanting to get a jazz fretless bass for a long time and a crappy Squier fretless costs $350+ new, so of course I bought it.

So anyway now I have it at home and I've been playing around with it a bunch and yeah, it sounds great, and I can't wait to have it on some recordings. It's very playable, and I think it'll add what my music's been missing (namely real bass; I usually just use loops, a keyboard patch, or a pitch-shifted guitar). I might even do some bass+voice songs, since it actually has a fun, cheerful sound to it, even. I also want to finally do a proper recording of Gin or Ginseng (it's annoying having to point people to other peoples' live recordings of that, where not everything is under control).

So anyway, now I have four guitars total (the Squier, the Epiphone, the Ibanez, and now the Samick). I need a better storage/display solution or something. Maybe some of those wall-mounted guitar hooks like what they use at music shops. I don't really care for guitar trees, and all of the multi-guitar racks I've seen either take up way too much floor space or don't actually display the guitars. Any suggestions out there? Ideally something which can store both electrics and acoustics would be nice, but I'd also be fine with something which only does the three electrics and then have something separate for the acoustic (e.g. just using my existing acoustic stand) since I don't see myself getting another acoustic anytime soon. Though I have had my eye on a Martin ever since Bjam raved about their lower-end models so much...

Also, lately we have been practicing for a mini-gig, and I must say I'm actually getting to be pretty decent at the drums. I used to just be able to kind of keep a beat while banging on them in ordinary progressions with occasional clumsy fills, but now I'm actually able to experiment and improvise on the fly and usually keep it pretty coherent. Hopefully this mini-gig will get recorded and I can share.

oooh, fretless bass. Secksay.

I recently ditched all of my guitar stands in favour of wall mounted hooks. My floor area has never looked cleaner, and I'm not tripping over guitars anymore. As for specific models, I can't really make any suggestions. I made my own so I could tailor it to the dimensions of the guitars I wanted to hang. Basically, it's a long piece of wood with three single piece U-shaped mounts that I picked up from a local guitar shop. I routed the edges and stained it for effect.

Jedi Princess rocks. You guys should cover Take 5 with that new fretless, or maybe some Monk ("Well you needn't" is one of my favorites). Fluffy, now that I'm single again, you've got to hook me up with that hot piano player! Smile Also, tell MadDog that we missed him at PenguiCon, and we hope he can attend next year. You should come, too! I'd like to introduce you to several good friends.

That "hot piano player" is Spud's wife.

Why would Maddog be at PenguiCon? He's a political cartoonist who doesn't even own a working computer at home. Are you confusing him for John Hall?

Ouch. My apologies to the Spud, and the Spudette. I meant no offense.

Yes, I was totally confusing him with John Hall. There is only one TRUE Mad Dog, after all. Very Happy

You're still invited of course, if you'd like to come out for it. We have an EXCELLENT writers conference and group that has been IMMENSELY helpful to me in writing my book.

Hey, does phpbb have a spell check module?

No, but Firefox does.
