Narcolepsy ()

by fluffy at 02:35 PM
I don't want to be one of those people who sees a symptom list online and suddenly decides they have some bizarre condition, but I just learned that narcolepsy actually isn't quite how it's portrayed in pop culture and the symptoms actually describe me pretty well.

Super Paper Mario ()

by fluffy at 01:08 AM
What an odd genre fusion. It's definitely more Paper Mario (RPG) than Super Mario (platformer). It also took a little while to hit its stride but the first major boss fight started out with the trademark Paper Mario humor which got me totally into it. (The really sad thing was I understood every single reference that I noticed, though there's always the possibility that I didn't notice all the references.)

The actual gameplay could use more game and less exploration leading to cutscenes, though. Really it just feels like they took The Thousand Year Door and replaced the battle stage with the quasi-battles in exploration mode. Of course I'm also playing Yoshi's Island in parallel (on GBA) and that's the diametric opposite, with a lot of fast-paced dexterity challenges, which Super Paper Mario definitely is not.

I have a sore throat and a headache. Probably strep. Hooray.

-tan for all ()

by fluffy at 08:09 AM
Why stop with operating systems, countries, chili peppers, and psychotic child killers?

There needs to be an entropy-tan, a conservation of energy-tan, an orange juice-tan, a piano-tan... A -tan for everything, even an everything-tan! Also a tan-tan. (Also a tan-tan-tan and so on.)

I know the Internet can make this happen. I think Wikipedia would be a good start for this: every time you come across an article, make a -tan for it. Here's a starting point. Just from my first few clicks I see a need for a book collecting-tan, a Mark Pembridge-tan, and an Oakleigh Plate-tan.

Everybody Votes Channel ()

by fluffy at 01:01 PM
It's pretty interesting what sorts of (probably meaningless) statistics you can get from the Everybody Votes Channel on the Wii, since it divides responses by gender and location.

Upconverting DVD player ()

by fluffy at 07:52 PM
So, I just got a Philips DVP5982 1080p upconverting DVD player. I was really hoping it'd have a mode to compensate for 16:9 content encoded at 4:3, but it doesn't. On the plus side, even with the letterpillbox, things look a hell of a lot better than they did before on the crappy Cyberhome player.

This supposedly supports 1080p DivX content, so I'll have to try that out. Any good downloadable 1080p movies? Aside from Elephant's Dream which I guess is the benchmark for testing HD stuff out (just because it's freely available), which I used to see how 540p30 (downsampled from 720p) on the Apple TV looked.

Crossing Over ()

by fluffy at 07:10 PM
Seattle is the only place I've lived where it's illegal to start crossing the street if the "don't walk" indicator is flashing. Everywhere else that means "cross with caution."

Oh well, at least the cop let me off with a warning.

Why does Zelda cause such beardiness? ()

by fluffy at 08:08 AM
There's something about the Zelda games with how they almost-but-not-quite fit together that leads to a hell of a lot of Internet beardiness in trying to piece it together. There are multiple factions in the fandom who argue for different specific theories, like the "multiple timelines" camp, and different groups who discount the canonicity some of the games for various reasons, and it's almost like a religious war.

Salmon sausage pizza ()

by fluffy at 07:57 PM
Tonight's experiment: salmon sausage pizza.

Pretty simple; I diced half a tomato and spread it on a premade pizza crust, added basil, smoked mozzarella, fontina, salmon sausage, a chifonelle of Italian dry salami, green bell peppers, and sliced mushrooms. The lack of sauce makes it pretty good and the flavors all balance together pretty nicely.

Carbon-neutral movie making ()

by fluffy at 11:21 AM
So, Evan Almighty (the sequel to Bruce Almighty) is cashing in on their "save the world" plot and using it to promote a carbon-neutral charity, and they'd like to make the production of the film carbon-neutral. I went ahead and bought four trees (which they said would offset my carbon emissions). It's hard to tell if they're double-billing the fans' carbon offsets as movie production offsets as well though.

One cute incentive is that they'll put my name in the credits as a donor, though. Hey, does this mean I'll be listed in imdb, and if so, does it mean I'll finally have a Bacon-Erdős number?

(Yeah, yeah, I know, it requires an acting credit, blah blah. If things like writing credits etc. counted then I'd already have one.)

(2:38 and, duh, carbon credits probably don't count at all)

I am such a freaking hermit ()

by fluffy at 03:36 PM
I just realized that, aside from karaoke, the last time I've seen any of my friends was April 1, when I had a few of them over for dinner. If it weren't for karaoke I'd have had absolutely no social interaction at all.

I've mostly just felt too tired and drained from everyday stress to even consider mustering up the energy to, say, go to John's 54th birthday party, or Spud's gallery opening, or whatever. I feel pretty shitty about that now. I'll definitely have to go to Annie's dinner party on Sunday to try to make up for it. (Of course, treating this like paying back some sort of debt is probably not healthy either.)

Migraine mitigation ()

by fluffy at 01:34 PM
Am I the only person who uses cmd-option-ctrl-8 (in Mac OS X) as a means of mitigating migraine pain? White on black doesn't trigger the photosensitivity so much and so I can keep on doing stuff even when I can't even think about going into a lighted room.

What's wrong with this series of numbers? ()

by fluffy at 12:43 PM
Apparently this is illegal: 9 249 17 2 157 116 227 91 216 65 86 197 99 86 136 192

What if I wrote it like 167317762 2641683291 3628160709 1666615488?
