CES 2008 (, , )

by fluffy at 2:10 PM
So I'm going to CES in Las Vegas this year (to see what our competition is up to, not to be a booth babe or wahtever). As in, I'm sitting in the airport waiting for my delayed flight. The boarding area is getting crowded and pretty much everyone who is talking is talking about CES. I'm also a bit agoraphobic (especially in large crowds). This should be "fun."

Dear Caesar's Palace:

If you have this much trouble handling the network load when every room is booked by a tech junkie, you might want to consider increasing your infrastructure, seeing as how in perhaps 5 years, EVERYONE will expect Internet access, not just borderline-autistic technophiles who care more about Internet than gambling.

Meanwhile, I'm online through my cellphone. Hooray.

Relatedly: why do you put very nice Sony HDTVs in every room but hook them all up to a crappy fuzzy analog source and fix them to the wrong aspect ratio?

also why must you tempt me with all these nice looking things on the minibar and a big warning about how even pickign someting up will charge it to my room but not having any visible prices anywhere? (I am not sure work would appreciate me expensing things like a pewter chalice or a bottle of, uh, some kind of champagne, which again I can't see what it is unless I get it charged to my room)

also it seems a bit creepy that while I was out for dinner the turndown service showed up and very nicely folded the dirty laundry I had on the second bed.[/list]

BTW, my hotel room is larger than my whole apartment back in NYC. And this is one of the 'small' rooms (they were out of 'regular' rooms which were non-smoking).

(am I really in the desert? this seems so opulent and unsustainable, like I'm a fucking Harkonnen or something.)

If you stay in Las Vegas long enough you begin to notice an underlying......odor.

This odor is unique. It is a mixture of despair, greed, avarice, and lust. 'Vegas is a stunning example of poorly spent money from almost every angle.

After a while the smell begins to get to you, permeates your skin and leaves you depressed and wondering: With all this, could we have not made a better world?

I have 4 minutes to figure out where the hell the concierge tent is.
