Freaking hardware ()

by fluffy at 11:42 AM
Sometime last night, the hard drive in my MacBook died. So I guess I get to deal with the Genius Bar tonight (my appointment's for 6:45). Then I get to spend forever and a half reinstalling all my software, especially on the Windows side. (Fortunately I don't keep any important documents on the MacBook, and even if I did, most of it's backed up thanks to networked Time Machine.)

I guess while I'm at it I'd might as well bring my Apple TV too, and finally get that fixed (since its warranty is almost up).

Obviously I'm not particularly happy with the quality of the hard drives Apple is using in their consumer goods lately.

Sounds like a party, that.

The in-store glossary erroneously refers to Wi-Fi as being short for "wireless fidelity." whee.

nice to know that even with an appointment I have to wait a rather long time.

Okay, all the stuff I can install at home is installed. Tomorrow at work I suppose I'll be spending a significant amount of time installing Windows and all its crap. Meh. And this time I'm going to do it as a Boot Camp partition (so I can boot fully-native if I want) which means I won't be getting a whole lot of work done in the meantime. Ugh.

Hmmmm....I thought you couldn't use Time Machine on a network.....only on a local drive. Could you explain?

But.....that is what Wi-Fi stands for...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-fi

It's a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance....

Wikipedia as a whole is retarded.

http://www.boingboing.net/2005/11/08/wifi-isnt-short-for-.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wi-Fi#Origin_and_meaning_of_the_term_.27Wi-Fi.27_section_could_be_improved

The Wi-Fi Alliance trademarked "Wireless Fidelity" later because everyone kept on thinking it was what it stood for and they didn't want other people trademarking it. But that doesn't make it anything other than a backronym, and it's NOT what it officially stands for (it doesn't actually stand for anything).

It looks like the alliance themselves have flip-flopped on whether to say that it does (some press releases just parrot the common line) which just adds more confusion to the mix, I guess. But go to http://www.wi-fi.org/faqs.php and notice the complete lack of the word "fidelity." Also, if you do a Google search on all pages that contain that term on wi-fi.org you may be led to believe that the term is used there, but if you go to the actual pages you find that it's just a result of their SEO crap... the actual pages don't actually contain the term, aside from a couple of ancient press releases which don't even look like they were written by the WFA.
