That wasn't a very well-considered plan ()

by fluffy at 5:21 PM
So for some reason I got the idea that I'd open up my old 12" Powerbook and... do something with it. I'm not sure. I mean the thing that inspired it was the fact the power connector was flaking out and even though I knew there's no way I'd be able to fix it reasonably I decided to just open it up anyway. Then I thought maybe I'd take it apart and maybe, I dunno, mount the parts in some other case (which I don't have) and have it be some sort of art installation computer or something. And I guess I kept going because I felt a bit tweaky.

Anyway, the upshot is that I could probably get it back together at this point but it doesn't really seem worthwhile, considering how many working computers I have, most of which I never even touch. I really should get it back together so I could at least donate it to Goodwill or something though.

Old laptop = COM port terminal.

At least, that's what my old Thinkpad is becoming.

It's a Mac.

Macs don't have serial ports? Or USB ports to which a person so inclined might attach a RS232 adapter?

They do have USB ports but keep in mind that there's no generic USB 'serial port' class (the closest is 'modem') so it's a crapshoot as to whether whatever random adapter you hook up will work in OSX, which has excellent support for class-compliant devices but in my experience, most of those things aren't class-compliant.

Anyway, I have no need for a COM port terminal. I'm not even sure what I'd hook it up to. I don't think I even have any devices which even speak RS-232 anymore aside from my stereo (at least, not from user-accessible ports).
