Backhanded idiom ()

"They broke the mold when they made him" sounds like he is the last one of a long line of non-unique copies.

Yes, I think that that is the intent. Is is along the lines of "They just don't make them like they used to". I think they are trying to say "They don't make men like that any more".

I'd always heard it in a context implying the person's uniqueness and nonconformity.

As a kid I always thought like it sounded like an explanation of why he turned out poorly (ie, they broke the mould while trying to make him).
