I predict in the next five years, cell phones will be able to send messages by voice as an alternative to texting.
dude in car: I'm on my way
It will be sold as a safety feature, called "voice texting."
Later, they will add a version where the phone sends and receives "voice texts" continuously.
It will cost 20 cents per sentence.
Nobody will realize how stupid this is.
dude with phone: Lol I'm voice texting!
man with hat: You're stupid.

Okay so a few people have pointed out speech-to-text-message services on existing phones. That's just a first step (marketing-wise, not technology-wise) to having the actual audio message itself sent, and then a two-way continuous audio communications channel remaining open, which (at the risk of overexplaining a not-very-funny joke) is what phones do to begin with.

Anyway the main point to this comic was to parody xkcd and not to be funny in and of itself.

but it was anyway! good parody is a parody and is also funny in itself.

No, people were texting while driving, which made me (on my bike) nervous. I suppose the sentence was written ambiguously.
