212. Send in the clones

Transcript

Shane: Yes, Merideth? Is there a problem?
Merideth: Yeah, this foreigner seems to be a little bit confused.
Juni: I'm neither. I am Officer Juni Melrose and I need a translator and a room for Hira Melrose, my mother.
Shane: Okay, look.
Shane: That is Juni, and that is Hira. See?
Merideth: No, I see two of the same spadetail. Both of them are Juni Melrose.
Shane: Merideth...
Merideth: Same data node registration and this picture is clearly of both of them, right?
Shane: I apologize for this. Merideth can be a little slow sometimes.
Merideth: What'd I do wrong now?
Shane: Your mother is visiting from another province, right? May we establish her identity with genomics?
Juni: That wouldn't work either. We're basically twins.
Shane: I see.
Shane: Wait, what?
Merideth: See? This job is hard!

Here's the original script for the last three strips (originally scripted as two because I tend to try to cram way too much dialog in). I definitely like how they turned out much better:
[Juni meets Hira in front of the court building]
Juni: Mom... it isn't going well. I absolutely need you to tell them about Tsan Rumio and the [Hiero]information repository. About what it did to everyone who saw it.
Hira: "Oh, hi. How are you? What wonderful weather we're having."

Juni: Ngrrf. Sorry. How has your day been?
Hira: Feh, this place is strange. Why does everybody ask me what my [Hiero]specialty is?
Juni: Oh, no... you didn't go to Little Kajoshu, did you?
Hira: Yes, I wanted to meet your Broodwitch. Why?
Juni: Never mind, let's get you inside.

Agent: Please state your name and purpose.
Juni: Hi, this is Me-li-rĂ³-su Hi-ra, a consult on case 193857. Can she get a Kajoshi translator?
Agent: Certainly. Ah, yes, chamber 2947, Melrose.
Juni: And where should my mother go?
Agent: ... 2947.
Juni: Are you sure? That's my chamber.
Agent: ... Let me get a supervisor.

--

Supervisor: Yes, what seems to be the problem?
Agent: We seem to be having some communication difficulties. These Spadetails don't understand where to go.
Juni: No, I know where I'm going. 2947. But my mother needs a chamber.
Agent: Her data node is registered to Officer Juni Melrose.
Juni: Yes, that's me.

Agent: That's you?
Juni: I'm Juni. That's Hira.
Supervisor:So assign her a chamber.
Agent: I tried. She's already assigned, to 2947.
Juni: No, that's mine.
Agent: And you are?
Juni: Officer Juni Melrose.

Supervisor: So who's this?
Juni: Hira Melrose. My mother.
Agent: Sir, could you authorize a genome scan?
Juni: That wouldn't help. We're identical twins.
Supervisor: Oh, I see... Wait, what?
Agent: You see what I've got to deal with here?

Yes - totally a Shane. He could just as easily be a Terrence, though.

This should be fun.

Though wouldn't they be simi-identical twins/clones since Juni isn't female and Hira is female or is Juni just in denial (Haven't read the archives in a while so I probably just forgot the explanation that's probably already been given).

Juni is just in denial. It's been made quite clear in the past that Juni was born female (and it's been implied it had itself spayed); it was the product of parthenogenesis. They probably aren't genetically-identical (parthenogenesis isn't quite like cloning) but all of Hira's markers would appear in Juni's genome (genetically-speaking Hira is both Juni's mother and father), so without a full gene sequence it would be hard to tell.
