A “critter” is a manufactured creature that is the result of quite a lot of genetic manipulation on a stock human. This one was commissioned to be a companion/tutor/plaything by an eccentric billionaire, and it was trained in academic studies as well as music. However, for reasons unknown it was emancipated. Now it is just trying to make its way in a galaxy in which it knows a lot but has experienced very little.
