Fiona

Fiona’s been getting on in years. As a rescue stray I don’t know exactly how old she is, but the vet’s estimate was that she was around 18 months old when I adopted her in late 2012, so she’s probably 13-14.

For the last few days she’s been sneezing and sniffling, and often has had difficulty breathing due to congestion. No bacterial discharge from her nose though. She’s also been pretty lethargic and hasn’t wanted to sleep in bed with me and Tyler.

This morning she was feeling especially bad, so I took her to the vet.

She’s had a heart murmur for the last couple years, so the vet thought she might be experiencing heart failure. So we got some x-rays done. They aren’t showing signs of heart failure, but they did show a lot of food in her stomach. They were also sent off to a radiology specialist who might be able to determine things more precisely. She also got some bloodwork done, and hopefully I’ll get those results tomorrow.

She’s also been losing weight pretty quickly, around a pound between her last two checkups, and then another half a pound since the last one (which was only two months ago).

Over the past few days she’s also been drinking a lot of water, and the vet thought it’s possible she might have diabetes. But she was unable to get a urine sample, and it seems that her bladder is pretty tiny overall, and combined with her scrawniness it seems less like diabetes is possible.

Anyway, the vet prescribed her some antibiotics as a “just in case it’s a respiratory infection” thing, and just now I fed her a small can of wet food, which she ravenously devoured as if she hadn’t eaten anything in a week. And now she’s seeming a lot better than she was ealier today. Who knows how long that’ll last, though.

I do recall that a few days ago she seemed to have a constantly grumbly tummy, too. That wasn’t on my mind at the vet today but when she calls back tomorrow I’ll be sure to mention it.

Something’s definitely going wrong with her and I hope whatever it is passes soon. She’s such a good kitty and I want her to be happy.
